NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission has announced the inclusion of two new subjects, Statistics and Forestry, in the National Eligibility Test. The additions will take effect from the June 2026 session, expanding the range of disciplines available to candidates appearing for the examination conducted by the National Testing Agency.The National Eligibility Test is held twice a year, in June and December, to determine eligibility for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship in Indian universities and colleges. The decision to introduce new subjects was finalised during the Commission’s 597th meeting following recommendations made by an expert committee.Statistics introduced as new NET subjectStatistics has been added as an additional subject to the existing list of UGC NET disciplines. The inclusion aims to accommodate candidates specialising in statistical studies and related academic fields.The syllabus for Statistics has been made available on the official UGC NET website. Candidates preparing for the June 2026 session can access detailed course content and examination guidelines online. The move is expected to align the test structure with evolving academic and research requirements in higher education institutions.Forestry added to subject listIn a separate public notice, the Commission confirmed the introduction of Forestry as another new subject in the NET examination. This subject will also be available from the June 2026 cycle onwards.The Forestry syllabus has been uploaded on the official website, enabling candidates to review topics and prepare accordingly. The subject caters to students and researchers engaged in environmental studies, forest management, and allied disciplines.Decision based on expert committee recommendationsBoth subjects were introduced following recommendations submitted by an expert committee and approved during the Commission’s 597th meeting. The additions are part of efforts to broaden the academic scope of the eligibility test.Prof. Shyama Rath, Secretary of the Commission, issued the public notices confirming the changes. The notifications were released from the Commission’s office at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi.Candidates planning to appear for the June 2026 session are advised to consult the official website for updated syllabus details and further instructions related to the newly introduced subjects.
