After over two months, Sam Altman sends apology letter to Canada's Tumbler Ridge community for shooting that killed six children

ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has apologised for the mass shooting incident that happened in Canada more than two months ago. In a letter addressed to the community of Tumbler Ridge, Canada, he admitted that the company did not alert law enforcement about the online activity of the alleged shooter before the attack. In the letter, Altman said OpenAI had banned the user’s account in June for violating its policies but chose not to report the activity to authorities at the time. The apology comes after a shooting incident took place in the Canadian town, leaving six children among eight people dead and injuring 25 others.

In the later shared by Tumbler Ridge Lines, Altman wrote: “To the community of Tumbler Ridge,The pain your community has endured is unimaginable. I have been thinking of you often over the past few months. When I spoke with Mayor Krakowka and Premier Eby about this tragedy, they conveyed the anger, sadness, and concern being felt across Tumbler Ridge. We agreed a public apology was necessary, but that time was also needed to respect the community as you grieved. I share this letter with the understanding that everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time.I want to express my deepest condolences to the entire community. No one should ever have to endure a tragedy like this. I cannot imagine anything worse in this world than losing a child. My heart remains with the victims, their families, all members of the community, and the province of British Columbia.I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June. While I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.I reaffirm the commitment I made to the Mayor and the Premier to find ways to prevent tragedies like this in the future. Going forward, our focus will continue to be on working with all levels of government to help ensure something like this never happens again.Sincerely,Sam Altman”
