‘Khalnayak’ may have portrayed Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Dutt as rivals, but their off-screen relationship has always been warm. In a past interview, Jackie opened up on his bond with Dutt. He also shared a light-hearted memory from the film’s shoot.

Speaking in a 2023 interview with Siddharth Kanan on Jio Cinema, Jackie opened up about their closeness. He explained that their friendship goes back many years. This connection made working together even more special.Reflecting on the experience, he said, “The happiness of working with your friend (in Khalnayak) is completely different. Then working with your guru Subhash Ghai and talented co-stars like Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta — was a beautiful memory.”
The ‘Monkey’ fight scene memory
Jackie also spoke about a particular action sequence. It turned out to be both challenging and fun. He described how the scene involved climbing a tree branch. The actors initially watched monkeys playing on it.Recalling the moment, he said, “I remember climbing a branch of a tree for a fight sequence. Before that sequence, we were watching the monkeys who were sitting on that branch and having fun. Suddenly, Subhash ji told us, ‘Iske uppar chadh kar fight karenge (We will climb on this and fight).’ Suddenly, from watching monkeys, we became monkeys ourselves. That branch was so slippery. We were tied to it with just one hook and were made to fight. It was so much fun.”
‘Khalnayak’ sequel
The film is now set to return with a sequel. Sanjay Dutt recently confirmed the development. He revealed that he will produce the new project. He also plans to reprise his role from the original film. The announcement has generated excitement among fans and the makers also had shared a first look poster for the sequel.
Subhash Ghai’s role in the sequel
While the director for the sequel is yet to be finalised, Subhash Ghai will be associated with the project. He will take on a mentoring role.Speaking to TOI City, Ghai said, “Sanju was passionate about making this sequel for years. Even during his time in jail, he had written to me saying, ‘Uncle, I want to make this film’. So, I sent him the concept and story. If you ask me, no one can make this film the way I did. However, I don’t want to remake my own film; besides, I am 80 now. I told Sanju, ‘If you are so keen, why don’t you produce it yourself, and I can be your creative producer’. I am sure he will find the right director for the film and announce it soon.”
