India is a country of temples, some ancient, some beautiful, some unique beyond imagination. One such shrine that leaves devotees and travellers stunned is located in Karnataka. This lesser-known gem offers a darshan experience which is rare. This is the ancient Jharni Narasimha Swamy Temple where devotees do not have to wait in hours-long queues or simply walk the stairs to meet the deity. Here, devotees walk chest-deep through a narrow, dark cave flowing with sulphur-rich water to reach the sanctum. The journey is 300 metres long and takes devotees to the deity of Lord Narasimha, making it one of the most unique temple darshan in India. It’s a stunning cave temple which is counted among one of India’s most unusual religious experiences. It is also known as the “water cave temple” and the shrine offers mythology, adventure, geology in a way few religious sites can.The deity The temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, who is considered the half-man, half-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The sanctum here lies in a natural cave under the Manichoola hill range. The only way to reach the deity is by traversing through water that rises between four and five feet in depth. For short-heighted visitors, it can get a little difficult as the water can reach shoulder or neck level. As you walk inside this dimly lit cave, you’ll hear echoes of “Govinda” and “Narasimha Hari.” Sometimes, there are bats hanging from the ceiling, which add to the mysterious vibe, yet, the site doesn’t stop devotees. As far as the temple legends go, Lord Narasimha, after killing the demon king Hiranyakashipu, in order to protect his beloved devotee Prahlada, came to this cave. Here he slayed another demon named Jharasura or Jalasura who was believed to be a devotee of Lord Shiva. Before dying, Jharasura requested Lord Narasimha to stay in the cave. He requested the lord to bless devotees. And that’s why we see deity here blessing the devotees. After coming out of the water, devotees can see an idol of Lord Narasimha, which is believed to be self-manifested. The statue is carved into the laterite rock wall and next to it is a Shiva Linga which as per legends is the same where Jharasura himself prayed. The space inside is tiny. Sulphur water caveThe water inside the cave is said to have sulphur, which possesses healing properties and relieves people from skin-related issues. The temple is also popular among couples praying for kids. The water never dries upAnother mystery around the cave is the water never dries up. As per researchers, the site is a natural tubular spring formed due to Bidar’s laterite rock formations. It allows water to percolate continuously through underground layers. How to reachReaching here is not a task as the temple is easily accessible from both Karnataka and Telangana. Bidar is about 120-140 km from Hyderabad and can be reached by road in about three hours.Railways: The nearest railway station is Bidar Railway Station, some 5 km away.Airport: Bidar Airport is about 9-10 km from the temple.
