American billionaire entrepreneur and former Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban, who was once one of the most vocal evangelists for cryptocurrency, has revealed he has sold “most of” his Bitcoin holdings, saying the token has failed to live up to its promise as a hedge against global turmoil. According to a report by Fortune, Cuban who earlier described Bitcoin as “better version of gold than gold,” told Front Office Sports that the assets have not performed as per expectations. “When all the shit hit the fan with the Iran war, Bitcoin was always the best alternative to fiat currency losing its value, and I always thought it was a better version of gold than gold. Gold just blew up and went to $5,000. Bitcoin dropped … It’s not the hedge that I expected it to be,” he said.
Shift in sentiments
The comments made by Cuban mark a sharp departure from his earlier enthusiasm. In 2021, he said that he spend hours daily studying crypto and even integrated blockchain partnerships into this NBA team, the Dallas Mavericks. At that time, his portfolio reportedly included around 60% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum, and 10% smaller tokens. Cuban noted that crypto has now ‘lost the plot’ reserving his strongest criticism for memecoins and smaller tokens, which he dismissed as “garbage.”Cuban further added that he is “not as disappointed in Ethereum,” citing its role in hosting financial applications. However, Bitcoin has significantly outperformed Ethereum over the past five years, underscoring the volatility and uneven growth across the crypto sector. Once hailed as “digital gold,” Bitcoin’s inability to match gold’s surge during geopolitical crises has left Cuban questioning its role as a reliable hedge.

Cuban said that students these days use artificial intelligence (AI) excessively to ask the “right questions”. However, he said that students should not rely much on AI. Instead, they must use AI to enhance their own critical-thinking skills, rather than replace them. “They use strong inputs and apply critical thinking to evaluate results,” he said adding “AI helps students think bigger, but it doesn’t make decisions”.In an interview with CNBC’s Make It last year, Cuban said that tomorrow’s leaders might be today’s AI-obsessed kids. “Students who use AI will produce better, more creative work and gain a collaborative relationship with technology that’s needed in the future workplace,” he said adding: “Students who use AI will be best equipped to lead.”During the interview, Mark Cuban said that “Access is the biggest barrier” to students being taught how to best use AI tools effectively and ethically at school.
