Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has a message for everyone who thinks his company is in trouble: you are looking at this all wrong. The comment comes after the software giants watched their stocks fall following ‘fears’ that artificial intelligence (AI) will make traditional software companies obsolete. If AI agents can do the work that companies currently hire armies of employees to do, why would those companies keep paying for expensive software sold on a per-employee basis. Benioff is answering it directly, and to make his case, he has turned to real-world customer stories.According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, and a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), its customers have seen 40% fewer human interactions and 40% fewer IT tickets. Here’s his full post X:The software bears are dead wrong. At @Pearson, #Agentforce autonomously handles order statuses, refunds & lost access codes — increasing the percentage of customer questions resolved without any human interaction by 40%, says VP Gabriele Bauman. At @PenFed, our Agentforce agent handles password resets & account unlocks for employees — reducing total IT tickets by 40%, says EVP & CIO Shree Reddy. This is the Agentic Enterprise delivering real ROI today — not hype. Agenticware, not Software.Benioff explains that its agents now autonomously handle queries about order statuses, refunds and lost access codes for its customers, and another agent is helping a company employees reset passwords and unlock accounts.

Benioff on why ‘SaaSpocalypse’ won’t happen

Benioff’s argument rests on multiple pillars. First, the leading AI labs cannot simply replace what Salesforce offers, which includes decades of experience in data security, regulatory compliance and industry-specific workflows. He says these cannot be replicated overnight by a general-purpose AI model. The second argument is that customers who might theoretically try to build their own AI-powered alternatives would run serious risks around brand safety and compliance that make Salesforce’s established platform far more attractive. Finally, Benioff says that the AI labs themselves see Salesforce as a partner, not a rival. Both Anthropic and OpenAI use Salesforce’s workplace app Slack, and Salesforce has integrated their models into Agentforce.Salesforce launched Agentforce in late 2024, allowing businesses to build custom autonomous agents for use in their own workflows. Early reviews were mixed. Salesforce responded by building a new data layer into its technology stack.
